Look in the owner’s manual of any chainsaw and you'll find a significant number of pages devoted to warnings about the hazards of kickback.
Kickback occurs when the cutting chain gets pinched in the cut, or hits a knot or a foreign object in the wood. When the speeding chain stops instantly, the saw can pitch back violently out of the cut and back toward the operator. Unable to control the sudden and unexpected force of kickback, anyone operating a chainsaw can sustain serious, even life threatening injuries.
Manufacturers understand the seriousness of the problem and have responded with safety features that attempt to stop kickback. These include the safety chain, the chain brake and the tip guard. Despite these advances, however, there are still thousands of chainsaw injuries each year. Clearly, kickback can't be eliminated.
In a very different approach to the problem, the Centurion™ has been developed not to prohibit kickback, but rather to protect the operator when kickback does occur. The Centurion stands guard, keeping a solid, steel alloy barrier between the operator and the top edge of the cutting chain at all times.
Safeguard’s original kickback device was well received by commercial chainsaw users including fire departments and city municipalities. No market is more discerning than firemen whose lives are dependent upon the reliability and safety of their equipment.
To prevent serious, potentially life threatening injuries from Chainsaw kickback, the Centurion™ stands guard, keeping a solid, steel alloy barrier between the operator and the cutting chain at all times.
Chainsaw manufacturers have spent the last two decades reducing weight and increasing power. Twenty years ago, an average chainsaw weighed 24lbs. Today it weighs 13lbs. Over this same time period, additional power has increased chain speed by 20%. The result? The forces produced by kickback can send today’s lighter, more powerful chain saws into motion faster, farther and more violently than their predecessors.

Kickback accidents more than doubled in the 1990s.

These include saws manufactured by Stihl, Husqvarna, Poulan, Homelite, Shindaiwa, Jonsereds, John Deere and Sears (Craftsman), as well as many older/discontinued chainsaws with bar studs that accommodate the 8mm/3/8 inch stand-offs in the installation kit. The Centurion™ cannot be installed on Stihl chainsaws incorporating the “Quick Chain Adjuster” or on Shindaiwa models #300 and #375, as these models do not have the twin studs required for attachment.
